Internal qualities, a reflection of your voluntary choice of cultural background or an involuntary upbringing matters much more.

I can give two bad examples of involuntary upbringings. All the Russified Ukrainian, Polish and Baltic children are more Russian than how they were originally, same as all the European boys kidnapped by Ottoman Turkey. I don't think they had much trace of being Greek, Bulgarian or Slovenian left, identity wise, given the circumstance. Probably even less so if castrated as sex slaves, presumably.

On the opposite, Romanized citizenship was a thing also. I think the self identity is more dependent on cultural background than race. Race can play a minor role, or maybe no role at all sometimes. Yet, occasionally, race plays a big factor but I think it is a voluntary choice by the persons themselves
